Surrounded by a multitude of lakes and rivers, Zarasai has been known as “the Lithuanian Switzerland”. Zarasai is probably the best destination to relax in spectacular pine woods, wild nature and enjoy calming atmosphere that comes with the water. It is easy to reach and just 146km from Vilnius in northeastern Lithuania.
Information about the city

Zarasai could be called a paradise, the city rising above water and forests. It offers some exceptional tourist objects to visit. The oldest tree in Lithuania grows in Zarasai. Stalmužė oak is approximately 1500 years old and one of the oldest oak trees in Europe.

In addition to that, Zarasai region can boast of having the largest lake in Lithuania – Drūkšiai. Among many other interesting places to visit there is the Energetics Museum, an observation wheel, the Dusetos art gallery where the most famous Lithuanian artists show their art, and an old brewery where guests get to taste local beverages.

Bigger and smaller cultural and sports events take place in Zarasai region. Summer festivals and concerts appealing to people of various likings are held in the Great Island of Zarasas Lake. This resort area offers picturesque landscapes, safe and peaceful pine forests, and more than three hundred lakes in the whole region of Zarasai.

It is a perfect place with favorable microclimate to strengthen your health by enjoying aqua tourism activities, exploring wild nature or just breathing the fresh air.

Interesting facts and some useful information

Zarasai was the first city to receive the title of the Lithuanian Capital of Culture with a resort area status. In 2010, the Zarasai Region became one of the European Destinations of Excellence.


Approximately 30% of Zarasai region is covered with gorgeous forests with pine forests being the majority. These green areas are an important part of climate therapy which helps to sleep better, stimulate metabolism and liver function. Zarasai has everything needed to do that from taking air baths, resting outdoors, to combining sun baths and swimming in natural water reservoirs.


Zarasai has something to offer all year round. Winter meets guests with iced-over lakes where people enjoy ice-skating, country skiing and fresh winter air. Spring and autumn add a touch of beautiful colours of nature to the scenic landscapes. Summer is a time of fun filled with festivals, cultural events, and sports.
